Project overview
Since 2018, BC Housing has been leading the planning and design of a rental project 1451 Bertram Street in partnership with M’akola and the City of Kelowna. Due to changing market conditions, the Province and BC Housing have made the difficult decision to cancel this project in its current form.
Market conditions in Kelowna have changed significantly, with rents stabilizing, demand softening, and significantly higher vacancy rates. While this is positive news for renters, the changes in the housing market have made this project less financially viable, and it no longer represents an efficient and effective use of public funding.
This decision is not a reflection of the efforts and commitment of project partners – it simply reflects changing rental market conditions in Kelowna and the need to ensure public investments are used prudently and deliver most value.
BC Housing retains ownership of the land and is exploring future options for the site.
M’akola Housing Society was selected through an open public process to operate this site.
